Pharmaceutical workers give industry mixed bill of health

Confidence that pharma will resist the recession – but redundancy concerns remain

  • 51% of pharma workers are confident the recession will affect their industry less than others
  • 11% think it will be completely unaffected
  • 28% of respondents’ employers are currently looking to recruit
  • But 47% have put a hold on recruitment
  • And 32% think their employer will need to make redundancies

22  April 2009 –Workers in the healthcare industry are confident it will be resistant to the recession, despite being already ravaged by long-term restructuring, a report released today reveals.

According to a poll of 1,000 candidates registered with specialist recruitment website www.emedcareers.com, one in two workers (51 per cent) are confident that pharma will be less affected by the current downturn than other industries.

Desire to help others outweighs salary and career development

Top reasons for joining the pharmaceutical industry:

  • To help people in need (57%)
  • Career development (26%)
  • Workplace location (18%)
  • 51% have never considered leaving the sector
  • 32% have been in healthcare for more than 10 years

25 April 2007 – Nearly a third of UK pharmaceutical employees believe media reporting on the industry is unfair, while 59% believe a more open and honest dialogue with the public would help improve the industry’s image.

Reasons for continued loyalty to an employer:

  • Ability to help others (40%)
  • Career development (24%)
  • Salary (21%)
  • Benefits packages (13%)

A desire to help others is the number one reason employees are attracted to the UK pharmaceutical sector, according to research released today by emedcareers.co.uk, the online job board for the pharmaceutical industry.
