NHS changes lead to new Medical Device roles

Ian Sandison

Ian Sandison, Remtec

In May 2010 the new coalition government came into power and in July they issued their White Paper – Equity and Excellence: Liberating the NHS. As we move away from 150 or so PCTs in England to around 400 GP consortia what new roles are being created in the medical device industry to allow it to get closer to what the NHS is doing?
Over the past few years we have seen the emergence of a number of roles and functions within Medical Device Companies that were traditionally the preserve of Pharmaceutical companies. These include, Re-imbursement, Public Policy Research, Health Economists, Ethics and Compliance and Outcomes Research. Going back 20 years ago when I joined Becton Dickinson and during my 12 years there and at Smiths Medical these functions either did not exist or they sat within marketing or regulatory. We are now seeing the establishment of whole new departments dedicated to these functions within large Medtech companies, Let’s explore some of the reasons for this. AXESS bucks market with 12% growth

Axess logoGiven the tough market conditions, it’s always pleasing to hear of long-term emedcareers clients thriving. Axess, who has placed candidates through emed since 2008 has seen 12 % growth over the past year – their 20th anniversary – and 20% over the past two.

Ian Thomas, MD of AXESS explained to emed where the growth in the jobs market has come from:

Our experience has been that in tough financial and market conditions – and they have been tough – clients and candidates are going with the consultancies that they know and trust. Our research backs this up.
Within the last two years the contract and interim market has been strong and shown good growth. However, there are definite indications for 2011 that the permanent market is recovering well, particularly at the senior end. Medical Affairs and Medical Liaison, Pharmacovigilance and QA and Compliance have all grown in 2010. The stories of the death of Clinical Research in the UK have been premature – we think that it is holding it’s own, but may be tougher for next year.

We’ve managed to capitalise on the opportunities in a tough pharma recruitment market by drawing on the skills of our consultants – the majority of whom have worked in the industry, and who receives satisfaction rating of over 95% from candidates and clients for their expertise and knowledge.
